How to Keep Your Finance Team Sane

Anybody that has worked in a finance department will tell you that “Budget Time” is akin to “Jail Time”.

The annual cycle of producing the annual budgets is a torrid time of collecting data ad commentary, collating, consolidating and reviewing.

But is this an inevitable process, or is there a better way?

1. Get better access – The ability to view the data online cannot be underestimated. There is a large amount of audience participation in preparing your budgets.
2. Stop using Spreadsheets – Sure they will do the job, but consolidation, particularly of commentary, just isn’t easy.
3. The Rolling Forecast – Starting with a 12 month forecast makes the job much easier. Rolling a months’ forecast beats creating a twelve month budget every time.
