Cloud Computing – Afraid of heights?

You may have heard the term “Cloud Computing” already, then again, maybe you haven’t.

So, what is it? Can it work for me?

The concept of Cloud Computing is simple: it lets you run computer applications over the internet, without having to buy, install or manage your own servers. That is, to run these applications, all you need is an internet browser.

For small and medium sized businesses in Australia, there are many advantages in utilising applications in the cloud. Three points to consider:

1. Cost – There are savings to be had on your capital, IT and even energy costs. Developing and hosting applications within the cloud is very cheap.
2. Scalability – You only pay for what you use. Solutions can be scaled up or down dynamically depending on your requirements.
3. Security – Why wouldn’t you take advantage of the security framework provided by Google, AWS or the like? Who these days doesn’t use internet banking? Do you know where this data is hosted?
